Performs point-of-care testing on outpatients as required. I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on all ages of patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques. 2. Reviews requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity. Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self. 3. Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging. 4. Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens. May create registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system. 5. Searches master patient index (MPI) for appropriate patient demographic information using Metricom or other Laboratory Information System as provided. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy or prior documented experience perform phlebotomies. 2. Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment and maintenance of annual competencies in BLS. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment. Responsibilities
The primary duties involve collecting blood specimens from patients of all ages using venipuncture and capillary techniques, and performing required point-of-care testing for outpatients.
