JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to plan, coordinate and conduct physical education and health classes/activities based on the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) including swimming, for students ages 5-22 who are blind or visually impaired and may have additional intellectual and physical disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement all therapeutic and behavioral support programs for students in accordance with the student’s ability
  • Teach health and fitness to diverse students
  • Assist with extracurricular activities as designated
  • Follows school’s policies and procedures as stated in the Employee Handbook
  • Essential Functions: Develops and implements IEP goals related to Physical Education and Health Classes
  • Writes weekly PE and health lesson plans, documents student progress, and writes IEP updates and progress reports that are aligned to state standards
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students based on their IEP
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program
  • Instructs and supervises classroom Paraeducator(s), 1:1’s and Intervener(s) on how to support students cultivating physical fitness, hygienic habits and good social and emotional adjustments
  • Analyzes, demonstrates and explains basic skills, knowledge’s and strategies of games rhythms and fundamentals of body movement
  • Provides age appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of the students
  • Participates cooperatively with Teachers, Therapists and other members of the team to address student’s needs and develop plans according to the IEP goals
  • Integrates individualized student communication and therapeutic goals into daily lessons
  • Demonstrates good communication skills written and verbal
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Participates in faculty committees and student sponsored activities
  • Communicates with Coordinators, Teachers, Therapists, etc on students’ progress
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Current Pennsylvania Certification in Physical Education or Adaptive Physical Education
  • 1 - 3 years’ experience working with special needs children and/or young adults visually impaired with multiple disabilities is highly desired
  • Physical Requirements: Able to lift/transfer a minimum of 50 pounds, be agile, physically pursue clients on foot, physically restrain, bend, squat, stretch, reach, push up and stand for several hours at a time.
  • Act 34 Criminal History Background Check Report, Act 114 FBI Criminal History Report & PA Child Abuse Report.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
