JOB OVERVIEW
Under the general direction of a supervising physician(s), the Physician Assistant will utilize their knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide optimal care to patients accessing the primary care clinic. Drawing from the strengths of this diverse team and from AHWC’s values and mission statement, this role requires a welcoming, kind, and compassionate person for community members who visit the Primary Care Clinic and who may be experiencing homelessness.
SUMMARY
We are seeking a dedicated Physician Assistant to join our team at the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre of Winnipeg. In this role, you will provide patient-centered care that aligns with our holistic approach, supporting individuals in their journey towards improved health and wellness.
EDUCATION
One of the following eligibility criteria to apply with the CPSM:
o Hold the designation “PA-C”
o Graduated from another physician assistant training program approved by the College of Physician and Surgeons of Manitoba Council.
QUALIFICATION & ESSENTIAL SKILLS
· Experience in the area of mental health and addictions· Knowledge and experience in working with people with substance related concerns· Proficient at case management· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills· Trauma Informed Care Training· Completion of MICST (Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Safety Training)· Working knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) preferred· Current CPR certification· Knowledge of community resources· Ability to perform independently, take initiative, as a member of the healthcare team.· Demonstrated effective conceptual, organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking/problem-solving and decision-making skills.· Adheres to the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA)· Respects the roles and responsibilities of various members of the healthcare team
EXPERIENCE
· Experience working with clients with mental health and/or addictions an asset
· Knowledge and experience working with people representing diverse cultures, economic & health backgrounds, and sexual orientations and genders.
· Demonstrated clinical competence in the delivery of primary care services to a variety of client groups
· Experience with Accuro EMR

· Welcomes and supports all Indigenous - First Nation, Inuit, and Métis – and non-Indigenous community members entering AHWC / Primary Care Clinic, including people who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and persons who live with disabilities; sees to their immediate comfort
· Nurtures a judgement-free, shame-free environment, focused on harm-reduction and the journey of healing that the individual has defined for themselves
· Emphasizes culturally sensitive, culturally relevant, person-centered care
· Delivers safe and clinical practices in accordance with: AHWC’s program standards, policy and procedural operations, and organizational values; primary care program standards; regional health and provincial protocols
· Gives community members hope and encouragement
· Assists in response to emergencies by being familiar with the fire plan, emergency procedures, safety protocols, and location of emergency equipment, etc.
· Works in collaboration with Primary Care Site Coordinator and reports operational issues as advised
· Adheres to instructions respecting security, use, storage, and destruction of the Personal Health Information (PHI) Act
· Possesses knowledge of social issues such as poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, substance use, mental health/illness, racism, and other challenges faced by Indigenous populations in Winnipeg
· Completes other duties that may be assigned (be a ‘Helper’) when required as part of the team, not exceeding stated skills and capabilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Physician Assistants perform many tasks in collaboration with their supervising physician (s). Duties and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant may include:
· Providing support and services within professional teams under the direct or indirect supervision of a Physician
· Developing rapport with patients and families and providing education
· Documenting patient care and compliance with quality standards
· Ordering and conducting medical investigations under the supervision of a Physician
· Assessing the condition and needs of a patient based on interviews, interactions, and observations
· Performing selected diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
· Ordering and interpreting patient laboratory and radiological results
· Responsible for immunization
· Completing any mandatory training outlined by their employer
