SUMMARY

Full time opening for a Physician Assistant in Gastroenterology Department at the Garner VA. The PA will be fully qualified and certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role and in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree in any discipline or a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
    Preferred Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of successful outpatient practice as an Advance Practice Provider with at least one (1) year of Gastroenterology experience. Prior VA experience and working with Veterans. Demonstrated excellence in written/verbal communication, time management, and working with an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated evidence of leadership potential with an emphasis on skills in interpersonal relationships, program development, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Education (approximately 3%):

  • Serves as the GI Section’s Physician Assistant education point of contact for institutions that have Physician Assistant students participate in a rotation at the VAMC.
  • Precepts Physician Assistant students on their elective GI rotation.
  • Participates, directs, and provides opportunities for staff development through in-service education as needed.
  • Assures self-development responsibilities and maintains current knowledge of trends in gastroenterology and clinical medicine.
  • Participates in Gastroenterology Section’s clinical research programs when appropriate

DUTIES

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday-Friday

Clinical (approximately 90%):

  • Promotes, directs, evaluates and is responsible for the management of safe patient care to gastroenterology patients.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team to assess and monitor gastroenterology patients.
  • Facilitates patient’s entry and exit from various health care systems by establishing and maintaining liaison with a variety of medical specialists and associated staff.
  • Utilizes and promotes approved standards of care, procedures, methods and techniques, safety precautions and protocols in their application to the gastroenterology patient population in all settings.
  • Collaborates with other health care resources to ensure continuity of care.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends, skills, procedures, and protocols relevant in the area of specialty and serves as a resource person for the medical center staff.
  • Attends and manages outpatient Gastroenterology Clinics.
  • Performs procedures as needed for patient care.

Administrative (approximately 7%):

  • Assists the Chief of Gastroenterology in the care and management of patients with gastroenterology disease receiving care at the VAMC.
  • Assists in review and triage of outpatient Gastroenterology consults, assessing patient acuity and appropriately schedules evaluations.
  • Serves on the interview board when GI Section is attempting to hire new staff for open positions.
  • Initiates, coordinates and participates in interdisciplinary meetings as needed to address issues of quality of care, documentation and delivery of services; attends meetings on- site or off-site when appropriate and relevant to the facilitation and delivery of Gastroenterology services.
