Physician Assistant Basic Requirements

  • Master’s degree in any discipline or a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years managing patients in Primary Care clinics.

Responsibilities

DUTIES

The position is located within the Primary Care Directorate of the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (JALFHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois. The JALFHCC is the nation’s first fully integrated federal health care facility, integrating Veterans Affairs (VA) with the Department of Defense (DOD), specifically, the United States Navy (USN) under a single chain of command. The incumbent performs a variety of duties in a complex 1C medical facility, which is constantly evolving within a highly competitive geographic area.
The Physician Assistant (PA) provides comprehensive and quality care to patients in the FHCC by remaining fully accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice, and demonstrating leadership and accomplishments when providing patient care and developing and implementing programs which will improve the delivery of care relating to Primary Care.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The PA develops monitors and alters a comprehensive health care treatment program to include:

  • Gathers a comprehensive database and performs initial and ongoing assessment of assigned patients’ medical, physical, and psychosocial status.
  • Conducts and documents histories and physicals.
  • Orders and evaluates diagnostic tests (e.g., labs, x-rays, EKGs, consults, and similar studies).
  • Records progress notes.
  • Generates appropriate referrals to other health care professionals and community agencies according to established procedures.
  • Attends Interdisciplinary Team meetings.
  • Triages, establishes working diagnoses, administers treatment, ensures case management and provides subsequent evaluations per accepted standard of medical practice for various disciplines.
  • Discriminates between normal/abnormal findings and formulates a treatment plan accordingly.
  • Initiates and adjusts selected medications with formulary approval for inpatients.
  • Documents in the medical record all procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Institutes and adjusts plans of care, utilizing PA skills.
  • Provides appropriate responses to life-threatening emergency situations.
  • Documents clinical findings and progress notes in the medical record.
  • Develops and provides patient treatment and education plans.
  • Conducts preventive screening procedures based on age and history.
  • Provides wellness care, health promotion, health maintenance, and disease prevention care.
  • Initiates and monitors health maintenance in conjunction with the patient, family/significant other and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team conferences to assure quality patient care management.
  • Participates in the quality assurance program and actively participates in monitoring for and identifying clinical quality issues and is actively involved in process improvement initiatives and implementation of corrective actions when indicated.
  • Act as consultant to nursing personnel, physicians and other health care consultants in their area of clinical experience.
  • Determine, in collaboration with Attending physician, appropriate admissions, discharges referrals and transfers to different levels of care and coordinates management of patient with attending physicians and the Interdisciplinary team.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm
