PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT - PROGRAM MGMT-SURGERY

The NYG Surgical Program is seeking a skilled Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Acute Care Surgery team. Under the delegation and supervision of a General Surgery Physician, the PA will coordinate and manage patient care within a multidisciplinary team environment. This role is critical to enhancing access to care, improving clinical efficiency, and supporting collaborative, team-based service delivery. The PA will report directly to the Director of Surgery and serve as an integral member of the NYG Surgical Program.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality care in a fast-paced, high-turnover Acute Care Surgery environment. The role requires a highly organized professional who thrives in a dynamic, client-facing environment and is motivated by new challenges. Strong interpersonal, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Exceptional verbal and written communication, teaching skills, and clinical expertise will contribute to team success overall.
Additionally, the PA will uphold health and safety standards, contributing to a safe environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and families.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of a Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant Degree (BScPA) or equivalent Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) preferred.
  • Physician Assistant regulation through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Certified or eligible to be certified through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS),
  • Experience working in an Acute Surgical setting preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in both a verbal and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines.
  • Demonstrated competency to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
  • Proven problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative medical model of care with all members of the health care team.
  • Acceptable employment and attendance record.
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories and interviews, to develop and implement appropriate treatment plans and interventions.
  • Conduct medical procedures including IV insertion, wound and drain care, chest tube and catheter management, incision and drainage and suturing under medical directives as delegated by supervising physician.
  • Organizing laboratory and diagnostic investigations.
  • Obtain informed consent and communicate procedural risks, benefits, and goals of care to patients and families.
  • Provide patient education, counselling, and discharge planning for inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Manage common medications as per medical directives.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to organize patient follow-ups or refer patients to home care services when needed.
  • Participate in orientation, mentorship, and interdisciplinary teamwork with medical learners, residents, nursing, and allied health.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and contribute to quality improvement and safety initiatives.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation.
  • Perform physical examinations and interpret findings.
  • Perform controlled acts under medical directives delegated to you by a physician.
  • Counsel patients on preventative health care.
  • Perform other duties within your competencies as a Physician Assistant
