SUMMARY

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree in any discipline or a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
    Preferred Experience: 3 years of experience as a Physician Assistant.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • To provide independent advanced level physician assistant clinical expertise to patients and their families on an ongoing basis
  • Applies knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situation
  • Supports Radiology Department within several subspecialties including: MRI, Interventional Radiology, CT, and US
  • Protocoling imaging orders.
  • Review orders for MRI and associated medical records to determine order/exam appropriateness.
  • Assist with device management and research for MRI safety.
  • Administering medications in MRI for scanning and conscious sedation.
  • Monitor Cardiac device patients in MRI.
  • Manage patient contrast extravasation and contrast reactions in the Radiology Department.
  • Assist with IV placement.
  • Obtaining consent and documenting procedures performed for which the physician assistant is responsible.
  • Performs/assists in image-guided procedures
  • Performs fluoroscopy examinations
  • Examine outpatients and inpatients to determine the need for further health care.
  • Interpret imaging studies only under direct supervision of a Radiologist-PA’s may not provide final reads or interpretations
  • Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs) if deemed necessary for patient care.
  • Communicates urgent and emergent findings in addition to those of possible malignancies to the clinical partners/stakeholders.
  • Write orders and prescriptions for medications for the care of patients within the defined Scope of Practice.
  • Documenting progress notes and summaries in the patient’s medical record. The supervising physician must cosign the notes.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary medical teams/specialties for imaging services or image-guided procedures provided in Radiology
  • Communicate effectively with ordering providers to discuss patient care and make recommendations regarding imaging orders
  • Participates in Radiology and institutional level quality and process improvement projects

Experience and Education. PAs at the PA-III grade are at the full performance level and lead and organize patient care independently, practice within multi-disciplinary teams, and coordinate all aspects of patient care across the health care system. They utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes. They function as experts in clinical practice and/or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, may serve as mentors for transitioning PAs, and may provide training for health care students. Individuals can demonstrate the KSAs for the full performance level by:

  • Three years of successful practice as a PA. OR,
  • Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, U.S. Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA. OR,
  • A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and one year of professional practice as a PA
