Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY

San Diego State University’s Student Health Services (SHS) is seeking a dedicated Physician to provide high-quality, efficient, and student-centered medical care. Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Physician will play a key role in delivering primary health care services, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and supporting the well-being of SDSU’s diverse student population.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, and psychiatry.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a medical school and completion of a residency training program in a primary care field such as family medicine, general internal medicine, gynecology, general pediatrics, emergency medicine, preventive medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and skills in managing mental health problems, including longitudinal care for mild to moderate anxiety and unipolar depression.
  • Knowledge of health promotion and ability to connect student-patients with appropriate campus or community resources.
  • Proficiency with computers, including word processing, email, and electronic medical records documentation.
  • Training and experience in interpreting digital x-rays, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and spirometry reports.
  • Ability to manage a challenging workload, adapt to same-day scheduling changes, and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students.
  • At least one year of post-residency primary care experience, preferably in a college health or young adult setting, is preferred.
  • Training and experience managing concussions in student-patients is preferred.
  • Training and experience performing minor surgical procedures (e.g., punch biopsy, incision, and drainage, toenail avulsion, laceration repair) is preferred.
  • Experience in specialized areas of student-patient care, including insertion/removal of long-acting reversible contraceptives, prescribing HIV PrEP/PEP, and prescribing gender-affirming therapy, is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Provide Comprehensive Medical Care: Assess, diagnose, and manage acute, episodic, and chronic conditions, as well as provide preventive and health maintenance services.
  • Collaborate with Multidisciplinary Teams: Work closely with other physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and medical staff to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
  • Utilize On-Site Resources: Incorporate radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, and in-house specialty clinics (Orthopedic and Gyn) into patient care.
  • Support Student-Athletes: Consult with Athletic Medicine physicians and athletic trainers on student-athlete health concerns.Follow Clinical Protocols: Deliver care consistent with established standardized procedures and adapt to the changing needs of the health center.
