Description

Our client, Peterhead Port Authority, has a fantastic opportunity for a Pilot / Marine Officer to facilitate the safe and efficient conduct of the navigation of vessels within the Peterhead Port harbour limits, in accordance with harbour regulations.
This is a full-time permanent position based in Peterhead. Please note applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK and stay within 1 hour travel distance from Peterhead prior to applying.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience as a Class 1 Pilot would be desirable.
  • STCW 11/2 Master Unlimited Certificate or Royal Navy equivalent is advantageous.
  • Competent and recent ship handling skills and use of tugs.
  • Ability to direct actions in a calm manner, particularly in contingency situations.
  • Valid ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate or equivalent.
  • Team player.
  • Must speak English clearly and fluently.
  • Competent in ship handling and navigation.
  • Confident in taking the conduct of a vessel and working with a bridge team.
  • Strong ability to fit into and work well with different bridge teams.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to communicate with a wide and diverse range of staff and stakeholder in all situations.
  • In depth knowledge on ship handling, vessel manoeuvrability and propulsion systems.
  • Broad knowledge regarding seamanship and navigation.
  • Understanding about the use and effects of tugs.
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant legislation.

Responsibilities
  • Pilot all classes of vessel with or without the use of tugs in accordance with the Marine Management safe systems and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare and agree passage plans to allow vessels to perform their operations and to leave safely upon completion.
  • Develop effective working relationships with other Pilots, the Marine Operations department, Tug and Boat Crews.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure all safety and operational requirements are met.
  • Review and up-date Marine Risk Assessments.
  • Review and up-date the Marine Safety Management System and associated procedures.
  • Conduct marine validation trials for new activities.
  • Attend training where required.
  • Assist the Harbour Master in the day-to-day management of the Port.
  • Attend and actively participate in relevant meetings including Board meetings.
  • Timely report of marine incidents.
