MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • Technical/vocational school diploma in planning or related courses with experience in planning related to research, data analysis, monitoring, policy analysis and communicating findings is preferred.
  • Interest and experience in relevant topic areas such as affordable and non-profit housing, tenant rights and protections, and initiatives to address homelessness would be strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with rezoning processes and a working knowledge of zoning and land-use regulations, land development economics and urban design principles is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated research skills and abilities in reviewing and evaluating data including experience collecting, analyzing and managing a variety of data sources.
  • Strong report design and reproduction and of graphical representation of statistical data.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement in prioritizing tasks and communicating to colleagues in a timely manner to meet prescribed deadlines.
  • Ability to participate successfully on work teams and with the public and complete assignments using sound professional techniques and judgement.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment and adjust to meet changing deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Ability to perform a variety of clerical tasks.
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge or skills in using computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and software for graphic design and mapping including the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator) and GIS software (ArcGIS Pro)
  • Familiarity with the City’s housing, land use, and area planning policies and regulations is an asset.
  • Ability to meet transportation requirements.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. Responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE AND FUNCTION

The Planning Assistant III works as part of the Housing Policy team that is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of Housing Strategies and other affordable housing policies and programs, including the management and analysis of relevant research and data. The Planning Assistant III provides technical support (data management, mapping), socio-demographic research and analysis, and assist in organizing and implementing public engagement events to support achieving the goals and targets outlined in Housing Vancouver.

SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports the work of the team in moving project milestones and policies forward to implement key actions identified in the City’s Housing Strategy and Action Plans, and housing policies identified in the Vancouver Plan
  • Undertakes technical work, including policy research, developing and maintaining databases and records, and collecting and analyzing large data sets to support the work of the team
  • Creates graphics, maps, charts and other materials to convey complex ideas and analysis in an accessible way
  • Develops engaging presentations and documenting meeting outcomes clearly
  • Coordinates public consultation processes, including organizing and participating in public meetings and events, coordinating logistics, and preparing informational and graphic materials
  • Analyzes and summarizes public comments and feedback, and responding to enquiries from the public and housing stakeholders
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
