Description
What You’ll Do Conduct independent field inspections to ensure pesticides and fertilizers are stored, used, and distributed safely and legally — protecting Ohio’s environment and communities. Evaluate facilities, applicators, distributors, and production sites for compliance with state and federal regulations (ODA, USEPA, etc.). Review pesticide and fertilizer product registrations and support updates to statewide registration systems. Investigate consumer complaints about pesticide and fertilizer use, working closely with supervisors to assign and resolve cases. Observe pesticide application in the field, inspect application records, and ensure proper licensing and product labeling. Conduct fertilizer‑related inspections of manufacturers, distributors, and blenders across agricultural and non‑agricultural sectors. Perform marketplace inspections to verify products are legally registered and compliant. Gather evidence for hearings or legal action, including conducting interviews and preparing official reports. Monitor pesticide exams, review fertilizer tonnage reports, and issue regulatory orders when needed (e.g., stop‑sale). Deliver presentations and speak with both industry professionals and the general public on regulatory topics. Collect and submit samples (pesticides, fertilizers, lime products, industrial byproducts) following strict EPA chain‑of‑custody protocols. Provide testimony in administrative, civil, or criminal proceedings as required. What Makes This Role Exciting High-impact fieldwork that directly supports environmental protection and safe agricultural practices. Variety every day — from outdoor inspections and sampling to investigative work and public outreach. Independence and responsibility, with opportunities to develop technical expertise and earn federal credentials. Statewide exposure, working with farmers, applicators, manufacturers, and community members across Ohio. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s-level coursework in an agricultural discipline such as agronomy, biology, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, or environmental science. At least one year of hands‑on experience in an agricultural setting aligned with the responsibilities of this role. Basic computer skills, including at least three months of experience using a personal computer. A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as needed. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment.
