General Summary Statement
This is a professional level position that has the responsibility of sharing oversight of the hospital point-of-care testing program. The position will help coordinate point of care (POC) testing operations and assist the POC Supervisor in monitoring nursing and other users of point of care testing systems.
Other responsibilities include, POC quality assurance, maintenance of necessary inventory, implementation of new POC technologies, and interaction with vendors. Administrative duties include maintaining a professional workspace, and execution of reports and other data mining tasks. This position also has responsibility for all POC information technology systems, including trouble shooting, and will help keep these systems in operational order.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs procedures using appropriate equipment and instruments available.
Exercises sound judgment in result interpretation and problem solving. Recognizes and troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment or procedures.
Ensures competency records are complete for all areas that perform POC testing. Follows up on any areas not competent.
Presents in-services for personnel performing POC tests. Assists with instruction of procedures and techniques to student’s, technologists and new employees.
Performs and records quality control for instruments, and equipment. Initiates troubleshooting and corrective action. Notifies the manager of quality control results that are outside established laboratory ranges and reports what corrective actions were taken.
Effectively assist co-workers in the absence of specific instruction or during lag time to accomplish departmental or section goals.
Performs maintenance and repair on instruments as required
Follows established protocol for reviewing quality control and documents appropriate corrective action when areas fall outside of acceptable compliance. Meets with sections failing to meet QC/documentation compliance.
Orders, maintains, receives, dates and labels inventory of supplies needed to keep the section in working order.
Provides Manager with adequate notification when supplies need to be replenished.
Maintains a clean, orderly and safe work area.
Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety and HIPPA regulations; notifies Supervisor when hazards are found, completes mandatory in-services on, or before the due date.
Demonstrates initiative in continually improving personal knowledge, skills, and work experience; and in improving departmental functioning.
Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodologies, test specificity and sensitivity.
Education Training and Experience Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Biology or chemistry.
Must meet CLIA standards for high complexity testing.
Three 3 years’ experience in Point of Care preferred.
Licensure/Certification MLS Certification by a minimum knowledge based exam such as the Board of Certification (ASCP) or equivalent required.
