The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing microscopic analysis of materials using polarized light microscopy techniques to identify and quantify asbestos percentages with bulk building materials. This role requires strong analytical skills, technical precision, and the ability to interpret complex optical properties. Key Responsibilities - Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis using polarized light microscopy (PLM). - Identify minerals, fibers, and crystalline materials based on optical properties. - Interpret birefringence, refractive index, pleochroism, extinction angles, and interference figures. - Document findings clearly in laboratory reports - Maintain and calibrate all lab equipment. - Follow laboratory quality control protocols and safety procedures. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams - Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., ISO, EPA, OSHA, NVLAP, CAELAP where applicable). Qualifications Desired: - Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Materials Science, Chemistry, Forensic Science, or related field. - 1-2+ years of hands-on experience in polarized light microscopy. - Strong knowledge of optical mineralogy and crystallography. - Experience preparing and analyzing unknown samples. - Proficiency in laboratory documentation and reporting. Preferred: - Experience with asbestos analysis (NIOSH 582E, EPA 600/R-93/116, CARB 435) - Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience. - Professional certifications related to microscopy or materials analysis.
