JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a superior officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety or designee, the Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of College properties, faculty, staff, students, guests and visitors during the assigned tour of duty; and is responsible for patrolling the buildings, grounds and adjacent public areas to enforce the New Jersey State laws, and the regulations, policies and procedures of the College.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Maintain responsibilities in spite of inclement weather and other similar factors. Report to work on occasions of school closing due to such events, unless otherwise notified.
  2. Ability to work an extended, flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, according to demands of the role and tasks.
  3. Be subject to recall should an emergency event occur that effects the safety and well-being of the college community.
  4. Required to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, reach, talk, listen, read, and write; and occasionally required to run, restrain individuals, and be exposed to physical conflict.
  5. Must successfully complete First Aid training.
    Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE (NUMBER OF YEARS), KNOWLEDGE AND/OR ABILITIES

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Possess a New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) Certification, or have attended and successfully completed a New Jersey Basic Police Academy and be a fully certified Police Officer, or Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO II) with less than three (3) years break in service, as required by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.
  3. Valid New Jersey Driver’s License with a good driving history and capable of operating a law enforcement vehicle both day and night in emergency situations.
  4. Must successfully qualify for an approved firearm, both hand gun and long gun, as prescribed by the NJ Police Training Commission.
  5. Must be 21 years of age or older.
  6. Must be a United States citizen and a legal resident of the state of New Jersey.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively use computers in operating software programs associated with campus police duties.
  8. Ability to pass extensive background investigation including, and not limited to, interview, investigation, psychological examination, drug screening.
  9. Ability to effectively communicate and read in the English language, both orally and in writing.
  10. Good problem-solving and excellent interpersonal skills.
  11. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

High School Diploma

EXPERIENCE (NUMBER OF YEARS), KNOWLEDGE AND/OR ABILITIES

  1. Associate or higher degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
  2. At least one-year prior security or police experience on a college or university campus.
  3. Graduate from a NJ Police Academy through the alternate route program.
  4. Bilingual.
  5. Community policing orientation and desired involvement for the area served.

Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY ROLE

Oral and written instructions are received from a superior officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety or designee. The Police Officer may supervise security officers and aides as assigned.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Protect life and property enforcing and adhering to New Jersey state laws and College regulations, policies, and procedures.
  2. Patrol the buildings and grounds of the College with special attention to areas of high crime incidents.
  3. Prevent and suppress crime, and notify superiors of crimes and other notable incidents.
  4. Apprehend and protect suspects and offenders by responding to complaints and calls for help, observing violations, making arrests, and processing individuals.
  5. Conduct criminal investigations with the gathering of evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, interrogating suspects, and preparing reports of the investigations.
  6. Testify in court or at college hearings as required.
  7. Respond to emergency calls such as fires and personal injuries.
  8. Minimizes personal injury by rescuing and reviving victims and radioing for medical assistance.
  9. Inspect and maintain assigned equipment including firearms and clothing.
  10. Participate in departmental in-service training, training seminars, and related events as required. Conduct training seminars for students, staff, and faculty as assigned. Assist in the training of new officers as assigned.
  11. Give directions and general information to guests and visitors as needed.
  12. Perform other related duties as required.
