Description Role Purpose Statement: Nonprofit community developer and affordable home builder seeks a highly motivated and experienced Policy & Advocacy Director. Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County (NHS) serves as a catalyst for local residents, business and government representatives to work together to build stronger neighborhoods. More than just housing, NHS targets its work to underserved community through financial education, affordable lending and redevelopment. Focused on preserving legacy, NHS works to strengthen the lives of families and businesses throughout the region. The successful candidate will conduct and track research for policy and advocacy purposes. Help determine key issues and advocate with city, state and federal officials on consumer issues. Track housing and community development policy at all levels of government. Assist in collecting, compiling and analyzing data and surveys on key community issues. Assist in liaising with government officials and their aides as important issues arise and provide necessary research and background to facilitate effective meetings. Draft policy statements and responses to current issues affecting local communities. Track funding opportunities at local, state, and federal levels Knowledge of housing, financial/banking, economic policy matters and development on all government and community levels. Knowledge of mortgage-lending trends in modest-income communities locally and nationally. Works collaboratively and joins with local, state and national advocacy coalitions and policy entities to represent NHS and the interests of its clients. Helps determine and set advocacy agenda for NHS and trains appropriate staff and volunteers on key policy/advocacy agendas and representation. Ability to supervise policy or research interns. Available to work evenings and weekends if needed. Requirements • Master's Degree in Government Affairs, Community Planning, Political Science, Public Policy, with at least five (5) years of experience in non-profit environment preferred. • Strong research, organizational, and communication skills. Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite and GIS systems Physical Requirements: Lift up to 20 pounds Sit at desk for extended periods of up to three or four hours at a time Speak and hear detailed information via verbal communication in person, telephone and /or community meetings Stand and/or walk for majority of a workday
