JOB SUMMARY

We are looking for a Policy Analyst to join our Committee Office at the House of Lords. You will be part of the Committees Scrutiny Unit, which provides high-quality research support and analysis for House of Lords select committees.
As a Policy Analyst in the Committees Scrutiny Unit, you will have the opportunity to support different committees and work across a range of policy areas. You will be assigned a mix of quick turnaround briefing work and longer-term research and policy tasks.
You will be able to work up to three days from home per week (dependent on business needs), and a minimum of two days on-site in Parliament. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a keen interest and prior professional or postgraduate experience in public policy and enjoys working in a fast paced, dynamic working environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You’ll be accountable for –

  • Preparing briefings for committees
  • Scoping potential future inquiry work
  • Identifying prospective witnesses and preparing possible questions that committee members might ask witnesses
  • Analysing and summarising evidence submitted to committees and drafting briefing notes on key issues
  • Contributing, under the direction of experienced colleagues, to drafting Committee reports
  • If required, attending committee meetings
  • If required, organising seminars, briefings or visits relating to a committee’s workplan

PERSON SPECIFICATION

What we’re looking for –

  • 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Good knowledge of, and professional or postgraduate experience in policy and the UK public policy environment.
  • The ability to become proficient in new topics quickly.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to distil large volumes of material into clear, concise, and analytical briefings and reports.
  • Understanding of the political context of the Committee’s work and wider public policy debates.
  • The flexibility and resilience to produce high-quality work to tight and competing deadlines, showing initiative where appropriate.
