QUALIFICATIONS

University graduation in political science, public administration, economics, social sciences, or in a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

The position requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent ability to conduct research and collect data and information using a variety of resources to undertake effective policy analysis.
  • Strong ability to generate analysis using quantitative and qualitative data and apply results to program policy.
  • Ability to think conceptually and critically to generate well-analyzed and realistic policy options and recommendations on complex issues.
  • Knowledge of policy and program development frameworks, strategic planning, and experience in policy and program assessment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with a variety of audiences.
  • Experience preparing and providing options analysis, reports, briefings, and presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse teams in developing sector strategies, analyses, or policy and program development.
  • Good understanding of economic concepts..
  • Experience in strong relationship building and some stakeholder engagement.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of public/non-profit programs related to economic, industry, and business development.
  • Understanding of key issues that face Alberta’s industries and supply chains, and factors that drive economic development and industry competitiveness in Alberta.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and policies at the federal, provincial, and municipal level that impact the industrial economy.
  • Project management knowledge and experience.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Industry Policy, the Policy Analyst supports the development of strategies and policy projects, with a focus on Department priorities and mandate items to ensure Alberta remains a highly competitive destination for job-attracting investment.

The primary responsibilities of the Policy Analyst include:

  • Identify key trends, drivers, best practices, and opportunities related to industry growth and competitiveness in Alberta.
  • Help inform the development of recommendations to inform Department decision-making.
  • Contribute to policy development and program design, to help advance mandate items on ensuring Alberta remains a competitive destination.
  • Liaise with other branches, divisions, ministries, and key stakeholders to support policy development / analysis.
  • Provide expert advice and recommendations on a range of economic topics and issues including those related to industrial and logistics development supports and projects within the scope of the division’s priorities.
  • Work closely with team members including the Managers and Directors in the branch, JETI colleagues, and contacts in key ministries.
  • Prepare internal and external reports, briefings, and communications.
