QUALIFICATION

  • Baccalauréat en sciences politiques, en politiques publiques ou l’équivalent;
  • Trois ans ou plus d’expérience dans un environnement de recherche/politique dans un contexte autochtone, à but non lucratif ou gouvernemental;
  • Connaissance approfondie des droits des Autochtones et des questions qui y sont liées au Canada;
  • Expérience de travail dans le domaine de la politique publique axé sur les questions autochtones urbaines, y compris la rédaction de documents politiques comme des notes de synthèse, des énoncés de position et des recommandations;
  • Expérience des méthodes de recherche qualitative et quantitative dans une optique de décolonisation et d’analyse comparative entre les sexes;
  • Expérience dans les domaines de la justice, des langues autochtones, de la réconciliation urbaine, des relations internationales et du droit international, ainsi que de la sécurité alimentaire des populations autochtones en milieu urbain;
  • Connaissance de la recherche anti-oppressive et des cadres d’alliance, y compris une expérience en collecte éthique de données et en rédaction et recherche tenant compte des traumatismes et des forces;
  • Solides compétences en matière de communication écrite et orale;

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, Public Policy, or equivalent;
  • 3+ years’ experience in a research/policy environment in an Indigenous, not-for-profit, or government setting;
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous rights and related issues in Canada;
  • Experience working in public policy with a focus on urban Indigenous issues, including writing policy materials such as briefing notes, position statements, and recommendations;
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods with decolonizing and Gender-Based Analysis-oriented lenses;
  • Experience in the areas of Justice, Indigenous Languages, Urban Reconciliation, International relationship and international Law, and Urban Indigenous Food Security;
  • Knowledge of anti-oppressive research and allyship frameworks, including experience with ethical data-gathering and trauma-informed and strengths-based writing and research;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information into accessible formats of varying length and scope;
  • Ability to effectively multi-task competing priorities on short timelines;
  • Ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner;Being able to work in French or Indigenous languages is an asset
Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development of NAFC’s policy initiatives, including conceptualization in line with NAFC’s strategic goals, research, development of policy recommendations and dissemination;
  • Research and create briefing materials for leadership on NAFC’s key policy areas, including writing speaking notes for NAFC’s appearances in the House of Commons and Senate, and quickly producing briefing notes;
  • Research and write policy research papers summarizing NAFC’s policy stances;
  • Provide leadership through writing up-dates and briefs for the management team, community partners, Friendship Centres and PTAs;
  • Research and write submissions to the United Nations’ various Human Rights bodies;
  • Look for opportunities to build partnerships with other service delivery organizations and other advocacy organizations;
  • Represent NAFC at various forums, workshops, and within working groups;
  • Research and write analyses of relevant Government policies as they impact urban Indigenous communities, with an eye to local, provincial/territorial, and federal jurisdictional issues and politics;
  • As needed, support NAFC’s committees and working groups in their work by scheduling meetings, doing research requested by the committee, attending meetings, taking notes; and
  • Write and edit national funding applications and identify opportunities for funding, and as needed, participate in negotiations with government counterparts.
