POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION RESEARCH

Background: Drs. Elif Bilgic and Sandra Monteiro at the MERIT Centre are seeking applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in health professions education research, with the possibility of renewal. The fellowship is designed to support the career development of an early-stage education researcher and to contribute to advancing scholarship at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual simulation, and assessment in health professions education.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a MERIT Scholar and will join a vibrant community of interdisciplinary researchers at the MERIT Centre, McMaster University.
The McMaster Health Education, Research, Innovation, and Theory (MERIT) Centre has served the Faculty of Health Sciences for more than 45 years. Our vision is to grow a community of scientists and clinicians to advance health professions education through research and applied science.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will engage in education research that advances the integration of AI-enhanced technologies and virtual simulation in assessment and learning. Working under the joint supervision of Dr. Elif Bilgic, whose research focuses on simulation-based education and assessment innovation, and Dr. Sandra Monteiro, whose research focuses on cognitive and learning sciences in health professions education, the Fellow will have the unique opportunity to collaborate across domains.
Time will be shared equally between both supervisors (50% with each), fostering a dynamic and interdisciplinary research experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • Completed a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., health professions education, AI, cognitive psychology, educational technology, biomedical informatics, or a related discipline). If selected, proof of PhD completion will be required.
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in AI, simulation, or assessment research in health professions education
  • Demonstrated commitment to dissemination of research findings, through conference presentations and/or publications (in a related field)
  • Exceptional capacity for teamwork.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently to organize workload, set goals, and work effectively toward deadlines.
  • Demonstrated capacity for collaboration with local, national, and international colleagues and collaborators.
    The position is available to start September 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed-upon date. The start date for this position is negotiable.
