Description

Over the past decade, Australia has experienced a troubling increase in silicosis cases, particularly among workers involved in kitchen benchtop fabrication, as well as miners and tunnel builders. Inhalation of silica dust particles can lead to lung scarring, known as silicosis, which may necessitate lung transplants or even result in premature death. Furthermore, exposure to silica dust heightens the risk of autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma and amplifies the chances of developing lung cancer. In 2023, Australia took a significant step by banning the use of engineered stone, yet despite this ban, the disease continues to claim lives, underscoring the enduring impact of this occupational hazard. The ongoing research into silicosis is of paramount importance, as it not only aids in understanding the disease better but also paves the way for improved prevention and treatment strategies.
Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) is an independent, not-for-profit research institute committed to reducing the impact of asbestos and dust-related diseases worldwide. We work in collaboration with individuals and organizations dedicated to eradicating these diseases while providing personalized wrap-around support to those affected by them. Our evidence-led research drives advancements in medical and scientific understanding and guides our global education and training initiatives.
We are looking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate with a keen interest in dust-related diseases, especially silicosis. The main focus of this position will be on exploring the mechanisms underlying silicosis development and investigating the therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles using techniques spanning biophysical, biochemical, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. The chosen candidate will also assist with other research projects and collaborations as outlined by the Principal Scientist and Academic and Research Director.
