The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Job Summary The Queen’s Journal is an entirely student-run newspaper at Queen’s University. The paper was founded in 1873 and has been continually published ever since. The Journal publishes a bi-weekly print edition and regular online content throughout the year. A writing sample must be e-mailed to newjournal.editors@ams.queensu.ca at the time of your application submission to supplement your application. Job Competencies Communication Outreach Organization Ownership Attention to Detail Cultural Sensitivity Creativity Job Duties Develop at least one postscript idea weekly and recruit writers via outreach Edit and fact-check every postscript before publishing Lay out the Postscript section Attend all in-print press days to lay out stories in the paper (occurs every other Thursday) For both in-print and online-only press day, upload stories to The Journal’s website (occurs every Monday and Thursday for the first six weeks of each semester and every Thursday for the last six weeks of the semester) Work with the Production Manager and visuals team to develop visual content for each story Attend all training sessions to become familiar with the department and adhere to the general operations of the department Respect and adhere to all company policies, procedures and ethical standards Maintain timely communication with your direct supervisor Attend all in person and virtual meetings Complete all assigned tasks efficiently and attentively Strive to foster a warm, comfortable and respectful atmosphere for all Always serve as a representative of the AMS and its mission statement Complete other job duties as assigned Job Requirements Possess strong organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment Working Conditions Interaction and collaboration with coworkers, management and the Queen’s community The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
Responsibilities
