  • Recent graduates or experienced professionals in environmental management, Māori resource management, or a related field.
  • Familiar with iwi environmental planning or have worked in community-based environmental roles.
  • Have familiarity of the RMA and other legislation that governs the way in which resources are managed within our takiwā.

  • Able to write clear reports and use standard office software (Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Organised, punctual, self-motivated, and adaptable to shifting needs and timelines.
  • Understanding of Te Ao Māori is essential; connection to Hineuru or local iwi is a bonus.

ABOUT US

Hineuru Iwi Trust is the post-settlement governance entity for Ngāti Hineuru, a proud iwi with deep connections to Te Haroto, the Mohaka and Rangitāiki awa, and surrounding whenua. We are committed to revitalising the wellbeing of our whānau, whenua, and taiao. Our work spans cultural, environmental, and social kaupapa that uphold the values of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga.
We are passionate about advancing environmental outcomes that reflect our mātauranga, and we’re looking for someone who shares that vision.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you passionate about te taiao and ready to make an impact in the environmental space? Hineuru Iwi Trust is looking for a dedicated Pou Taiao Projects Assistant to work closely with our Pou Taiao and contribute to kaupapa that protect and enhance the whenua and wai of our rohe.
This is a full-time, fixed-term role until June 2026, ideal for someone looking to grow in the iwi environmental management space. You’ll assist with research, stakeholder engagement, council processes, and fieldwork—supporting strategic environmental goals through a Te Ao Māori lens. This role offers the opportunity to work in a flexible, whānau-focused environment that values adaptability, initiative, and cultural grounding.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with environmental projects, including RMA submissions, council hearings, and iwi-led initiatives.
  • Prepare research summaries, reports, and policy documents to support environmental advocacy.
  • Attend and contribute to hui, wānanga, council sittings, and DOC engagements.
  • Manage logistics, record-keeping, and follow-up tasks across environmental portfolio.
  • Provide administrative support to the Pou Taiao, including stakeholder engagement and internal communications.
  • Be available for occasional travel and overnight stays as part of site visits and project commitments.
  • Work collaboratively with internal kaimahi and external partners in a flexible, high-trust environment.
