ROLE
We are seeking manager trainees with a keen interest in farming and animal wellbeing to assist in managing our layer and pullet farms in Ontario, Manitoba, or Quebec. This is a great opportunity to develop your career in farming, build specialized skills in poultry management, and gain new knowledge. We pride ourselves on our friendly, relaxed, and collaborative work culture. As a trainee, you will be an integral part of our team, collaborating and building relationships with staff, colleagues, and professionals within the poultry industry. This role will suit individuals who like to be active instead of desk-bound, who like variety in their tasks where no two days are the same, and who believe in always learning and striving for continuous improvement.
Upon completion of this 2-year management training program, you will understand how our farms operate and be ready to transition into a poultry management role at Burnbrae Farms.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the poultry department, we work as a team so everyone can reach their full potential. We raise birds from day old to the end of their laying period, always with the utmost concern for their health and wellbeing. As a management trainee, you will learn how to run a pullet and layer farm from the ground up through a hands-on, practical approach. You will develop both farming and leadership skills to be a successful farm manager.
Some of the farming skills you will learn include how to:
· Provide hens with excellent care. This includes following prescribed feeding and lighting programs, ensuring clean water and fresh air are provided, handling birds properly, and ensuring the premises are clean.
· Safely use farm equipment and troubleshoot maintenance requirements.
· Maintain the farm exterior, barn, and equipment.
· Implement our farm protocols and programs (workplace safety, security, animal welfare, food safety, on-farm biosecurity) and conduct appropriate employee training.
· Maintain and improve existing farm practices to meet and exceed internal and external audit standards.
· Help identify potential flock issues and act in a preventative manner using observation and farm data. Work with the farm manager towards continuous improvement.
· Begin to track costs and learn about the financial management of the farm.
Some of the leadership skills you will learn include how to:
· Provide clear direction, coaching, and guidance.
· Lead a team of people with diverse backgrounds.
· Prioritize farm tasks, organize workflows, and schedules.
Management trainees work full-time, 5 days a week. They are included in the rotating weekend schedule as well as the on-call after-hour schedule to oversee urgent farm activities.
