Job Description A professional panda nanny (panda keeper) cares for giant pandas’ daily needs, monitors their health and behavior, and supports conservation and research activities in a zoo or panda research center.​ Core responsibilities Feed pandas according to diet plans (bamboo, supplements, special feeds), monitor appetite, and record eating patterns and weight changes.​ Clean and maintain enclosures, sleeping areas, and pools, ensuring a safe, hygienic, and enriching environment with toys, climbing structures, and fresh bamboo placement.​ Observe and document behavior, mood, and social interactions, noting any signs of stress, illness, or injury and reporting them to veterinarians and senior staff.​ Care, enrichment, and education Assist with basic health checks and routine procedures under veterinary guidance, such as weighing, collecting samples, and administering treatments when required.​ Design and rotate enrichment activities (puzzles, scent trails, frozen treats, play sessions) that encourage natural behaviors like foraging, climbing, and exploring.​ Participate in public education by answering visitor questions, supporting keeper talks, and helping raise awareness about panda conservation. Qualifications Skills and qualifications Background in biology, zoology, wildlife science, or a related field, plus hands-on experience with large or exotic animals in zoos or sanctuaries.​ Strong observation skills, patience, and physical fitness to handle outdoor work, heavy bamboo, and intensive cleaning and feeding routines.​ For roles in China, ability to work in multicultural teams and often basic Mandarin to communicate with local staff at panda conservation centers.
