HealthCareCAN (healthcarecan.ca) is the national voice of healthcare organizations across Canada, delivering high-quality products and services to members in support of health system innovation and transformation. Our mission is to unite and empower healthcare and health research leaders to build a better, more equitable health system for the people of Canada. We are committed to advocating for health policy solutions and supporting our member organizations in their efforts to meet the healthcare needs of the population. HealthCareCAN is in the first year of its Strategic Plan 2024-2029 and is committed to answering the call for change in four key pillars: Champion the Canadian Health Research Ecosystem; Advocate for a Sustainable and Equitable Health System; Empower Leadership and Professional Development; and, Unite, Support and Serve Members.
The Board of Directors of HealthCareCAN is seeking an accomplished and visionary healthcare leader as President and CEO at a time when health care systems across the country are facing significant disruptors, including: pandemic recovery, financial pressures, health human resource challenges and responding to an aging population with more complex and chronic conditions requiring increasing healthcare support.
The President and CEO is responsible and accountable for providing leadership and vision in developing strategies, tactics, and plans necessary to realize the organization’s objectives, including supporting member organizations in resolving their challenges and providing advocacy that meets their needs. The role also involves advocating for health policy solutions that benefit Canadians and strengthening HealthCareCAN’s role as a leading voice in the healthcare sector. The President and CEO oversees day-to-day operations in alignment with Board-approved strategies, plans, and policies, and inspires and engages staff to pursue organizational goals, promoting ethical practices and a culture of respect and integrity.
While staying informed of socio-political trends and emerging policy developments affecting the healthcare sector, the President and CEO advocates for the Canadian healthcare sector to key stakeholders, promotes positive relationships with affiliated organizations, and leads and manages the organization within Board-established parameters. Additionally, the role involves providing effective governance support to the Board and its Committees, communicating effectively with the Board, developing and implementing annual operating forecasts, and keeping the Board informed of significant matters. The President and CEO addresses resource challenges, identifies and manages principal risks to the organization, and develops and maintains an effective organizational structure. Leadership focused on employee engagement and contribution, establishing a senior management development plan, ensuring a safe work environment, and conducting operations in compliance with laws and policies are also key responsibilities.
The President and CEO role requires expert leadership ability with senior executive experience, advanced strategic planning expertise, and deep knowledge of the healthcare sector. Bilingual proficiency in English and French (preferred), outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and excellent relationship-building abilities are essential. The role demands high visibility to act as the face and voice of HealthCareCAN, knowledge of policy development and government processes, and experience in board governance and stewardship. The leader sought will be passionate about strengthening health care delivery and health research across the country, and will deliver value to its diverse national membership.
