Description

FINDING BETTER WAYS TO PROVIDE THE MATERIALS THE WORLD NEEDS.

We are looking for a highly experienced Communities & Social Performance (CSP) practitioner to support our RioProjects portfolio – which includes a suite of 52 studies and 16 execution projects (growth and closure) across the globe.
RioProjects is part of Development and Technology (D&T) and is accountable for delivering major capital studies and projects safely and efficiently for Rio Tinto.
The team has rich expertise in project management and controls, procurement and contracting, and technical innovation and research. Excellence in ESG and CSP is critical to the success of the RioProjects portfolio. Building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with the communities where we live and work is key to the growth and sustainability of the business.
Communities & Social Performance (CSP) technical support for studies and projects is provided by the relevant Product Group (PG). This newly created Principal Advisor role would undertake programs of work to enable the portfolio to be effectively delivered and provide centralised support to PG CSP practitioners.

Reporting to the CSP Manager for RioProjects, you will:

  • Give effect to the CSP strategy and plan for RioProjects
  • Work with D&T and the PGs to map the CSP risk profile of the portfolio, bringing attention to risks and opportunities for the RioProjects leadership team
  • Implement portfolio-wide programs that uplift CSP governance for RioProjects – for example through the HSESC management system, first line assurance, and our work with contractors
  • Implement portfolio-wide capability programs to improve CSP leadership in studies and projects leads, and improve studies and project capability in CSP practitioners
  • Manage the budgets, schedule and resourcing to deliver such programs
  • Implement the CSP components of RioProjects strategies – e.g., China Strategy, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), New Growth, HSESC stewardship framework, and others
  • Provide direct technical CSP support to studies and projects where PG support does not exist or is limited or in transition (e.g., at the transition from Exploration, in Mergers and Acquisitions, in transition to Closure, etc.)
  • Provide technical advice and support on complex CSP issues and opportunities associated with project development – e.g., community benefits sharing, cultural heritage, company-community conflict, resettlement, project-induced in-migration, artisanal and small-scale mining, regional economic development, human rights, and other components of Rio Tinto’s CSP Standard
  • Connect internally and externally to maintain an up-to-date understanding of best practice social performance in project development
  • Work closely with the CSP Area of Expertise (AoE) to facilitate alignment of the RioProjects portfolio with Group-directed strategies / programs
  • Work closely with the RioProjects global HSESC systems and reporting team to ensure the inclusion of key CSP data in reporting and analysis
  • Work with the RioProjects communications team to incorporate CSP stories and learnings into internal and external communications
  • Lead and coordinate the global Community of Practice for CSP practitioners working on studies and projects to uplift capability and create networks for exposure and succession planning
