Provide authoritative judgement on high‑risk and high‑impact service performance matters Lift the quality and confidence of monitoring practice across the group Permanent | Wellington based position | 4.4 weeks annual leave Midpoint of $143,052 dependent on your professional skills and experience Ko tōu ake mahi - What you’ll do This is an opportunity to work at the sharp end of service‑delivery oversight, leading complex monitoring and assurance on some of the health system’s most critical performance issues. As Principal Adviser, Service Performance Monitoring, you’ll provide authoritative judgement on high‑risk and high‑impact service performance matters, helping senior leaders and Ministers understand what is happening, why it matters, and when proportionate escalation or intervention is required. Working closely with the Lead Adviser, you’ll strengthen system stewardship by integrating service, financial, infrastructure and digital perspectives, while lifting the quality and confidence of monitoring practice across the group. You will Lead complex service‑performance monitoring and deep dives by owning monitoring and detailed reviews into priority issues such as access, quality, equity and delivery confidence, drawing together quantitative and qualitative evidence. Provide authoritative judgement and escalation advice by assessing materiality, trajectory and system impact of performance risks, and leading or assuring advice to senior leaders and Ministers on proportionate responses. Deliver targeted assurance and escalated monitoring through shaping terms of reference, testing evidence, commissioning external reviews where required, and translating assurance findings into clear monitoring judgements. Integrate insights across monitoring domains by connecting service‑performance analysis with financial, infrastructure and digital monitoring, and partnering with clinical leaders to ensure monitoring conclusions are clinically credible and system‑focused. Provide technical leadership and uplift practice by mentoring Senior Advisers and Advisers, improving tools and approaches, supporting “no surprises” engagement with Health NZ and stakeholders, and embedding equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations in all work. Strong practitioner judgement, including the ability to distinguish signal from noise, assess materiality and advise on proportionate escalation or intervention. Experience leading complex analysis and deep dives, synthesising multiple evidence sources into clear monitoring conclusions. Capability to integrate service‑performance insight with financial, infrastructure and digital considerations, supporting a holistic understanding of system performance. Ability to produce and quality‑assure high‑stakes advice for senior leaders and Ministers on complex, sensitive issues.
