Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE

Lead the development of applied statistical and modelling analyses to assist both strategic and operational decision-making, and assess the impact of proposed or existing reforms on Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) policy. The Principal Applied Statistician will be experienced in applying advanced data analytics (such as impact evaluation, data science, or predictive modelling) to policy-related projects that support evidence-based reform and improve the equity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
The Principal Applied Statistician is a senior team member in a newly formed multi-disciplinary Modelling & Analytics (M&A) team within Corrections Research, Evaluation & Statistics (CRES). The M&A team combines expertise in advanced data analytics techniques and applied policy analysis to produce timely, objective and rigorous statistical insights that inform and support evidence-based policy and decision-making within CSNSW.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As the Principal Applied Statistician, you will have a senior role in leading the development of data-driven solutions and disseminating independent policy-related evidence. The Principal Applied Statistician will combine your expertise in applied statistical modelling (such as forecasting, applied regression modelling, causal inference and quasi-experimental methods, or predictive analytics) and your experience in translating complex technical analysis to effectively communicate policy-relevant findings that inform CSNSW strategic objectives.

The Principal Applied Statistician will have a critical role in, but not limited to, the following:

  • Identifying and analysing large datasets to build advanced prediction tools in priority areas such as domestic violence offending, behavioural outcomes in custody, and recidivism.
  • Applying quasi-experimental techniques to estimate the causal impact of program participation or policy reform on key outcomes, such as recidivism.
  • Modelling the impact of policy and operational reforms on key indicators.
  • Leading the development of high-quality reports, presentations, infographics and visualisations, and other publications
  • Translating and communicating complex analyses to inform evidence-based decisions for senior stakeholders within CSNSW and the criminal justice system.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation, insight-driven policy, and continuous improvement within CSNSW and the justice system.
