Responsibilities

THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Principal Cloud Operations Engineer to join our global Cloud Operations team and play a key role in delivering scalable, secure, and reliable cloud infrastructure.
This is a senior technical leadership role focused on supporting Seequent’s production infrastructure - not a traditional DevOps position. You’ll work closely with Cloud Operations teams in Christchurch and Canada, translating complex requirements into actionable deliverables, mentoring engineers, and contributing hands-on to infrastructure and automation.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

You’ll be instrumental in ensuring our production environments meet high standards for deployment, observability, and incident response. You’ll help the team resolve most production issues independently, without escalating to development unless necessary - all while fostering agility, collaboration, and technical excellence.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • Lead technical delivery across global Cloud Operations teams.
  • Translate complex or ambiguous requirements into clear, actionable plans.
  • Write Terraform, Python, and other code to unblock and accelerate delivery.
  • Ensure production deployments meet operational standards and are supportable.
  • Champion observability, alerting, and incident response best practices.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure high-quality documentation, SOPs, and runbooks.
  • Act as an escalation point for production incidents (on-call availability appreciated but infrequent).

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, YOU SHOULD HAVE:

  • Extensive experience in cloud infrastructure engineering (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Deep expertise in Terraform, Python, and modern automation toolchains.
  • Strong understanding of production support, incident management, and operational readiness.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and lead technical initiatives across distributed teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to rise above conflict and act as a peacemaker when teams have differing technical perspectives or delivery goals.
  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
