JOB DESCRIPTION

Experienced Conservation Officer needed to hit the ground running in a strong team fully engaged with the demands and variety of development that the history and growth of Cambridge entail - all within a context of evolving work practices and emphasis on cost recovery.
Besides the regular historic environment work of responding to application consultations and preparing conservation area appraisals, we are also involved with major development proposals; college decarbonisation; local listing; city heat network; and site allocation projects in an area with one of the country’s fastest-growing economies.
There are some 3500 Listed Buildings and over 100 conservation areas in the historic university city of Cambridge and surrounding villages and small towns of South Cambridgeshire.
You should have a degree or postgraduate qualification in a built heritage related subject and a good understanding of UK heritage-related planning legislation and policy together with considerable relevant work experience. IHBC Full membership (or relevant equivalent) is preferred.
The Historic Environment Team sits within the multi-disciplinary Design & Environment Advisory Service of Greater Cambridge Shared Planning - a shared service between Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.
South Cambridgeshire District Council is a four-day week employer. We expect our colleagues to get 100% of their work done, in around 85% of their contracted hours, for 100% of their pay. All Council staff will be able to opt-in to this way of working under a Productivity Policy. We are a four-day week employer as it helps us attract and keep talented colleagues and improves services by reducing our reliance on costly agency workers. It also supports improved health and wellbeing.
For more information, please contact Christian Brady, Historic Environment Team Leader on 07514 925897.
Closing date: 9am 6th October 2025
