We are partnered with a cutting-edge deep-tech company that’s pioneering autonomy, AI, quantum sensors, photonics, and next-generation navigation systems.
We’re seeking a Principal Engineer who is a specialist in the Fibre Optical Gyroscope Engineering space (FOG). We are looking for someone with proven experience across the full product lifecycle, from R&D and prototyping to commercialisation and scaled manufacturing of Fibre Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs). This is a strategic, high-impact, career defining position. The company are happy to support with relocation and require someone based at their wonderful Sydney, Australia offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead design and development of FOG and related systems for performance, reliability, and production readiness.
  • Develop and refine manufacturing processes focused on scalability and high-volume output.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (software, hardware, production, R&D) to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Analyse test data, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement enhancements.
  • Stay ahead of innovation in FOG tech, photonics, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Develop testing and coil process capabilities: fibre optic coil testing, stress conditioning, tooling, SPC metrics.

Experience and Profile Required:

  • Extensive, hands-on experience designing, developing, and manufacturing FOG units ideally at scale.
  • Ability to optimize performance, reliability, manufacturability (tooling, DFM, SPC).
  • Strong domain knowledge in inertial systems, photonics, or quantum sensing.
  • Advanced education (Bachelor’s/Master’s in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering—PhD preferred, but not essential)
  • Background in Aerospace, Defence, Navigation, Robotics, or Subsea applications
