The Collins Aerospace Mission Systems Strategic Communications Solutions (SCS) engineering team is seeking a Principal Level Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, integration, and installation of large subsystem equipment (such as racks and larger, more unique items) and associated cables/support equipment on to customer airborne platforms. This individual should be well versed in the analyses (weight & balance, structural, aerodynamics, etc.) required at a platform level to influence design early on and have hands-on experience with the integration and installation of equipment onto customer qualification platforms. The selected candidate will further be able to both mentor others on these tasks in order to help guide a team towards a successful installation.

QUALIFICATIONS YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • Experience with design considerations for installation and testing of equipment on military platforms.
  • Experience with producing artifacts and analyses, such as weight & balance reports and environmental studies.
  • Hands-on experience integrating subsystems into an aircraft environment and evaluating the impact at the platform level.

QUALIFICATIONS WE PREFER:

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Top Secret clearance. Selected candidate will be subject to security investigations/reinstatements and must meet eligibility requirements.
  • Active possession of an active U.S. government issued Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • Knowledge of A-Kit design standards, including the applicability of SAE AS50881.
  • Knowledge of relevant test standards, such as RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.
  • Knowledge of military airworthiness standards, such as MIL-STD-516.
  • Knowledge of relevant military standards such as MIL-STD-1472.
  • Ability to quickly acquire niche technical domain knowledge and contribute to the design/implementation of sophisticated architectural systems.
  • Knowledge of commercial and military electronics packaging form factors, chassis and electromechanical design, and analysis methods.
  • Experience with ruggedization techniques for commercial hardware.
  • Experience working with and managing sub-contractors.
  • Familiar with structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) best practices. (Ansys preferred)
  • Working knowledge of Agile development methods for hardware.
  • Prior experience working with bid and proposal efforts.
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) techniques and best practices.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Perform and mentor others in analyses related to aircraft integrated equipment, such as weight and balance, structural considerations, material selection, and effects on aerodynamics.
  • Contribute as a member and potentially lead of a team designing equipment to be used in flight and qualification testing.
  • Support the development of data and analyses required to input to customer owned airworthiness certifications.
  • Ensures the production of high-quality artifacts and adherence to standards across assigned program.
  • Acts as an interface between subsystem representatives and project leadership/customer representatives to ensure designs, integration, and installation of equipment meets customer requirements.
  • Potentially travels to customer sites to help perform and/or support the installation of equipment on to customer platforms.
  • Capable of owning or supporting Earned Value Management System (EVMS) or Control Account Management (CAM) activities as required.
  • Capable of supporting bid and proposal activities related to platform integration as required.
