In partnership with our client, a global leader in metals manufacturing, we are seeking an experienced Principal Metallurgist located in the Reading, PA area. The ideal candidate will provide a diverse range of technical product or process services to our internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals. This position provides technical support to all aspects of operations. This is a direct hire opportunity.
Principal Metallurgist - Materials Characterization
Job Description Summary: We are seeking an experienced engineer to provides a diversified range of technical services, with specific focus on advanced characterization of alloys, to our internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company goals. The employee will operate and maintain complex instrumentation for materials analysis, develop test protocols and instrumentation, and provide technical guidance supporting R&D projects for new product and alloy development. The employee will be tasked with recognizing emerging technologies and contribute to capital projects to bring new characterization technology to R&D. This role is responsible for providing training and education and mentors less-experienced staff in characterization role. Engineer will participate in project teams to address and solve complex technical problems and manage their own project portfolio. Employee will perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities for the Principal Metallurgist - Materials Characterization:

  • Internal expertise related to characterization techniques and tools to facilitate problem solving, new product and alloy development, and customer support.
  • Identify, develop, validate, and champion new characterization techniques and improvement of existing methods
  • Support development and adoption of new equipment and technologies.
  • Participate in capital project execution
  • Prepare reports and document findings.
  • Collaborate with R&D and technical teams to support technical programs
  • Lead metallurgical investigations supporting research, root cause analysis of non-conforming material, failure analysis, and new product development efforts.
  • Interpret ASTM and other Standards and Specifications for testing material
  • Track evolving industry standards and certifications to ensure future-ready product development.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required for the Principal Metallurgist - Materials Characterization:

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Science or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 8 or more years of relevant experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in multiple materials characterization techniques. (ex. Electron (SEM, EDS, EPMA) and Light microscopy, Mechanical testing, High Temperature Testing, Fatigue, Image Analysis, XRD, Corrosion, Fractography, and Failure Analysis.)
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment. Experience with primary alloy manufacturing technologies is a plus.
  • Functional knowledge of statistics, six sigma and/or BPI practices.
  • Experience collaborating across functions to support project execution
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
  • Ability to be self-directed.
  • Ability to serve as a mentor to internal resources as requested
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to initiate and lead and participate in project teams as appropriate.
  • Ability to reliably and consistently deliver results on schedule.
