Description:
Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders.
We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak over 75 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.
The Newcomer Academy for Over Age/Under Credited Multilingual Learners, including but not limited to Students with Interrupted and/or Limited Formal Education (SIFE, SLIFE), will offer career pathway programs for Multilingual Learners in academic and Career & Technical (CTE) program areas.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Principal is responsible for administering and supervising the total school program by establishing high expectations student achievement; building a positive school climate that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction; and building and developing a high-performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school’s vision and goals. The Principal will build collaborative partnerships with parents, community members, consultants, as well as, other internal/external resources and stakeholders to implement educational programs, CTE programs, capital improvements, systems reform, tools and other resources to accelerate student achievement. Successful candidates must also possess a high level of comfort with ambiguity and the willingness to seek new solutions.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Principal works under the general supervision of a superior with latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgment; work is reviewed upon completion through conferences and reports for conformance to established policies, objectives, rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, coordinates, organizes, supervises and evaluates the work of an instructional, professional, technical and clerical staff.
Participate in an annual review process to assess the overall effectiveness of the performance as Principal in the areas of responsibilities outlined below.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
- Such as may have gained through a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational administration/leadership; and
Experience:
- Such as may have been gained through a Minimum of five (5) years in teaching Multilingual Learners;
- at least two (2) years of leadership experience (including but not limited to building administrator, coaching, content specialist),
- experience successfully opening and leading a high performing public school in an urban district, strong knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition, career technical education, instruction, school operations, and pupil services;
- administrative residency in an urban school setting, preferred;
- experience in a teacher leadership position which provided the opportunities to engage in the following: lead collaborative data analysis, action planning, lesson study, and peer observation;
- lead and/or support school improvement planning, and/or coordinate school engagement activities;
RIDE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

- K-12 ESL Certification or MLL Endorsement for Administrators
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:
- Strong knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition, career technical education, instruction, school operations, and pupil services; administrative residency in an urban school setting.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Confidence to lead a community of diverse learners
- Focus on action and results in order to create a positive learning culture
- Ability to build and lead adult teams to promote the mission and vision of PPSD
- Must have the knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with people from diverse populations
- Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD and the relevance of job functions to that mission and vision
