Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Most products make it to “good enough.” Few go beyond. Not because people don’t care, but because that last stretch - the one that turns something functional into something memorable - is hard. It takes care, conviction, and taste. It takes someone who knows what good looks like, and doesn’t stop until it’s there.
That’s what this role is about.
We’re building an Experience Studio inside Pleo - a small, high-craft team focused on shaping how the product feels, flows, and works. As our Principal Product Designer, you’ll be setting the bar, making the work real, and helping others do the same. Not from the sidelines. From inside the work.
Please note: We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role in any of the listed locations.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

As a Principal Product Designer, you will:

  • Own end-to-end design for high-impact initiatives - across mobile, web, and emerging surfaces, delivering polished user experiences that stand out for clarity and cohesion.
  • Define and implement interaction and information architecture standards that unify how Pleo feels and behaves, improving consistency and ease of use across key surfaces.
  • Pair with system, content, and brand designers to deliver a unified experience that raises the bar visually and structurally.
  • Co-lead strategic redesigns, such as the mobile experience or cross-cutting UX patterns, from concept to shipped product.
  • Work closely with engineering and product to ship well-crafted experiences without compromising on quality or clarity.
  • Lead through prototypes, visual storytelling, and hands-on contributions to our design system, helping teams move faster with better defaults.
  • Mentor designers through feedback, pairing, and critique - helping at least two designers level up their craft or clarity.
  • Embed with product teams when needed to guide critical product moments - serving as a go-to for execution support and raising the quality bar.

WHAT SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE LOOKS LIKE

You enjoy bringing ideas to life, you’re most energized when working hands-on and seeing the craft come through in the final product.

  • You’re comfortable with ambiguity and take initiative when direction is loose or evolving.

    • You care deeply about the details, not just how something works, but how it feels.Your strengths lie in core product interaction design (vs. primarily brand, marketing, or content design), and you’re excited to shape foundational UX patterns that scale.
-

HOW YOU’LL DEVELOP IN THIS ROLE

In your first 6 months at Pleo, you’ll:

  • Define and roll out a new interaction model or UX pattern used across multiple product teams.
  • Lead the design for a core user journey or product surface - from exploration to shipped outcome.
  • Introduce execution standards or quality practices that improve speed and consistency for teams.
  • Earn trust as a go-to designer for execution support and interaction feedback.

In your first 12 months, you’ll:

  • Shape and ship a major product redesign (e.g. mobile app, navigation, or AI-integrated flow).
  • Elevate execution quality org-wide by evolving our design system and embedding high standards into everyday work.
  • Coach peers and juniors across the design org - becoming a multiplier for craft and clarity.
  • Influence product direction through the strength of your execution and product thinking.

We’re committed to helping you grow, whether that means leading increasingly complex projects, shaping how the Studio operates, or carving out a path into design leadership.

You’ll thrive in this role if you have:

  • A strong product mindset - you design what makes sense, not just what looks good.
  • Deep experience shipping complex, high-quality software products at scale.
  • A sharp eye for interaction design and UX architecture across responsive web and native mobile.
  • Experience working with or contributing to design systems in fast-moving environments.
  • Fluency in prototyping tools (Figma, Framer, or code) - whatever helps communicate your ideas best.
  • Clear communication - you can bring others on the journey through storytelling, structure, and conviction.
  • A high degree of autonomy and ownership - you see what’s needed and move to make it better.
  • Bonus points if you’ve worked with AI-driven interfaces or used AI tools in your workflow
