About the Role

As a Principal Scientist in TR Labs, you will lead complex technical projects and initiatives with high uncertainty / solution risk. This is a senior individual contributor role, which can also have a small team of 2-3 scientists directly reporting. The expectation is that you provide technical direction and thought leadership to both scientists and engineers, working on applied research and delivery workstreams. In this hands-on leadership role, you will:

  • Identify opportunities for applied research at the intersection of information retrieval and generative AI. Lead teams of applied scientists and research engineers to innovate new approaches, publish findings, and demonstrate value for customers.
  • Design and lead the development of 0-1 prototypes for a new class of agentic expert systems for legal professionals.
  • Re-imagine industry leading solutions for legal research with rich semi-structured content and high-value editorial enhancements.
  • Mentor applied scientists and provide technical direction on projects
  • Contribute to thought leadership both internally and externally; advise leadership on long term AI strategy and partnerships.
  • Inspire a high performing R&D team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and continuous learning.

About You:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in AI/ML, substantial experience building NLP applications for commercial products, demonstrated success leading high-performing teams, and the soft skills to bridge technical and business perspectives.

Minimum qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline or Master’s plus comparable experience
  • 10+ years hands-on building IR / NLP systems for commercial applications
  • Experience designing and implementing solutions with large language models
  • Demonstrated success innovating state-of-the-art research to solve applied, real-world problems.
  • Outstanding communication and analytical skills

Preferred qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of best practices and recent methods in information retrieval
  • Experience building expert systems with natural language interfaces
  • Experience designing taxonomies, knowledge graphs, and information retrieval systems for complex vertical domains.
  • Relevant publications at ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD, or similar.
