JOB SUMMARY:

The Educational and Transition Center Principal will provide effective school leadership in creating and managing a safe, supportive and positive learning environment where all students excel; and where staff share the vision of high performance and collaboration. This role includes supervision of instructional and support staff, compliance with special education regulations, professional development, and effective operational management to support student growth and independence.

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree and special education endorsement, required

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in educational leadership and special education program oversight.

SKILLS/OTHER:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of special education law, instructional practices, and staff development.
  • Knowledge of staff and program evaluation procedures.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with school staff, peers, students, families and central office personnel.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of contemporary methodology and practice as they relate to educating students with disabilities.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain curriculum and instructional practices that foster academic achievement and independence for students who have moderate to complex needs.
  • Ensure all instruction is data-driven, research-based, and aligned with state and federal standards.
  • Lead the evaluation and continuous improvement of instructional programs to promote student success.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal special education regulations and policies, including extended school year, transition and state assessments.
  • Monitor student discipline and attendance with an emphasis on equitable, supportive practices; experience with de-escalation strategies to support student self-regulation.
  • Supervise and evaluate professional and paraprofessional staff including teachers, therapists, and support personnel.
  • Provide and coordinate ongoing, high-quality professional development and in-service training.
  • Foster positive work relationships and staff morale through clear communication and leadership.
  • Carry out all supervisory responsibilities including hiring, training, and performance. evaluations, and addressing employee concerns in accordance with district policy and applicable laws.
  • Develop and maintain systems to educate and engage parents in their child’s learning and development; coordination of family and community engagement events.
  • Promote and maintain strong community partnerships and communication to support students’ social emotional and behavioral health needs.
  • Knowledge of Transition Compliance Standards.
  • Provide oversight of work-based learning locations and community partnerships (i.e. Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Goodwill Industries).
  • Coordination of state and district assessments for alternative achievement.
  • Provide oversight of physical facility maintenance to ensure safe, supportive learning environments.
  • Collaborate with local district transportation departments.
  • Maintain current professional knowledge through ongoing training and engagement with educational research and leadership best practices.
