What you’ll do:
The Principal Systems Architect Aviation & Maritime Safety will work within a small team within the Engineering Integration and Delivery group who are responsible for all engineering aspects (from initial concept to introduction of service) for Viasat’s Aviation and Maritime Safety Services.
The post holder will be the systems architect for the evolution of Viasat’s L-band SwiftBroadband (aero) and FleetBroadband (maritime) Safety infrastructure. The initial and main focus will be on new and emerging communications and surveillance requirements for ATC and UAV services, which includes ground infrastructure and Air Traffic Management integration. The postholder will play a key role in defining the end-to-end architecture of a hybrid safety service (GEO + LEO). In the aero safety domain, the role requires close work with industry partners within the Iris consortium including aircraft/UAV manufacturers, avionics suppliers, communications systems integrators and air traffic service providers operating communication systems and control services. The role will represent Viasat as a technical expert in meetings at ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), RTCA (Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics) and AEEC (Airline Electronic Engineering Committee) and with suppliers, and the post holder must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and adjacent disciplines.
Over time, the post holder will also be involved in the evolution of the global maritime safety services, which include a wide range of components, ranging from the User Terminals to specific safety voice and data protocols, along with associated applications and interfaces with Rescue Centres.
In the maritime safety domain, the role requires close working with industry partners including maritime safety terminal manufacturers, maritime safety applications development teams , IMO (International Maritime Organization) and maritime customers (internal and external stakeholders) . Over time, the post holder will represent Viasat as a technical expert in meetings with suppliers and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and adjacent disciplines.
Viasat, Inc. seeks an experienced principal systems architect to work within the Engineering Integration and Delivery group, the IRIS Program Manager, and the Aviation Business Unit. The day-to-day:

  • Compile system design requirements for next generation ATC and UAV safety service developments and for evolution of maritime safety services, including next generation of hybrid constellations (GEO + LEO)
  • SME for aero and maritime safety protocols
  • Produce system concepts, candidate architectures and conduct trade-off studies for UAV safety and maritime safety services
  • Create detailed design specifications for use in competitive procurements for evolution of Viasat’s infrastructure
  • Manage suppliers for implementation, verification, and change management of the aero and maritime safety infrastructure
  • Define/refine the operational model in planning for service introduction readiness, initial operations (e.g. customer Beta testing), and in-life service management metrics (KPIs) needed to demonstrate compliance with performance standards
  • Work with others within the Engineering Integration and Delivery group, and in the PMO and Global Operations teams to achieve the above objectives
  • Form strong technical relationships with peers at satcom avionic manufacturers, airframers, UAV integrators, ESA, and Viasat service providers
  • Over time, form the same relationships with IMO, maritime safety terminal manufacturers and the maritime safety services providers

What you’ll need:

  • Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication, Computer science or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience of architecting IP networked systems, including IPv6.
  • Technically fluent in telecommunications technologies, an understanding of IP-based mobile networking technologies and satellite systems.
  • Strong analytical capability, able to conduct system engineering and technology trade-offs.
  • Strong inter-personal skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships and trust.
  • Ability to work in a complex, international matrix organization alongside 3rd-parties.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Positive and energetic attitude.
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as a self-starter and self-motivated.

What will help you on the job:

  • Knowledge of networking technology including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Knowledge of PKI, VPN and related cyber security technologies.
  • Good knowledge of software development and engineering techniques.
  • Experience in the identification and capture of IT functional and non-functional requirements for large, complex projects.
  • Knowledge of Viasat and other satellite communications systems.
  • Knowledge of aeronautical Service domain in areas such as standards (e.g. ARINC, RTCA, ICAO, EUROCAE), or Certification, or Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN), or Air traffic DataLink Services.
