Summary The Principal Systems Engineer – Exploratory & Innovation applies systems engineering fundamentals and hands-on technical expertise to support early-stage medical technology development in an exploratory and innovation environment. Contributes to the definition of system concepts, early requirements, interfaces, and risk framing for novel product ideas. Works cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, human factors, and science partners to translate ambiguous needs into actionable technical direction and evidence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Front-End Innovation & Systems Framing Participate in early-phase system exploration, including needs finding, concept definition, and problem framing for new medical technologies. Translate unmet clinical needs, user insights, and strategic intent into system concepts, value propositions, and early technical hypotheses. Define system boundaries, use cases, operating environments, and high-level architectures for novel and evolving product concepts. Facilitate structured exploration (e.g., concept workshops, scenario analysis, system trade-off discussions) across engineering, clinical, and commercial stakeholders. Mentor junior engineers informally on systems thinking and structured problem solving; may lead small technical workstreams Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Demonstrated experience with systems engineering methods (requirements thinking, risk framing). Experience working on multi-disciplinary systems (mechanical/electrical/software/firmware, or connected devices). Exposure to early-stage innovation, advanced development, or feasibility/prototyping environments. Education and/or Experience: Required Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, or Systems Engineering Typically, 9 to 13 years of relevant experience in medical device development or other regulated product development environments. Preferred Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical or Systems Engineering.
