JOB OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an experienced and resilient Prison Nurse to join our healthcare team. In this role, you will deliver high-quality nursing care to individuals within a secure environment, addressing a wide range of physical and mental health needs. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong clinical skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to work effectively under pressure while maintaining compassion and professionalism.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse (Adult, Mental Health, or Learning Disability) with valid NMC Pin
  • Previous experience in custodial, community, A&E, or mental health nursing (desirable)
  • Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage challenging behaviours
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team

NICE-TO-HAVE SKILLS:

  • Experience in substance misuse, mental health, or offender healthcare
  • Knowledge of prison healthcare policies and procedures
  • Training in emergency response and resuscitation within secure settings

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessments and deliver evidence-based care to patients in custody
  • Administer medications, treatments, and emergency care in line with clinical and legal frameworks
  • Manage acute and chronic health conditions, including wound care, substance misuse, and mental health support
  • Work collaboratively with prison staff, GPs, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic care
  • Offer health education, advice, and support to individuals to promote self-care and rehabilitation
  • Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies within the prison environment
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records and ensure compliance with professional, legal, and regulatory standards
  • Contribute to safeguarding, risk assessment, and security protocols to maintain a safe working environment
