YMCA of Greater hartford Job Description   Job Title: Private Swim Instructor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt                               Job Grade:   Primary Department: Aquatics Reports to: Aquatics Director Revision Date: 02/24/2026                             Leadership Level:                                                                                                      The YMCA of Greater Hartford is an association open to all committed to helping people reach their potential in spirit, mind, and body.  Our commitment is based on the belief that the purpose of this three-fold development is to live out the values of Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility.   POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, The Private Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in Private swimming classes. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; building relationships is always a priority. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford is conveyed.   ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Instructs private swimming lessons in accordance with the YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Greater Hartford Swim Lessons Program Guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. 3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs. 4. Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.).  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. 7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.  8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.  9. Provides a lesson plan for any substitute.  10. Promotes the YMCA mission and demonstrate YMCA Character Development to all members. 11. Acquainted with other available facilities and activities.  12. Enforces all pool rules. 13. All other duties as assigned.   QUALIFICATIONS: * Must be 16 years of age or older.  * Current YMCA swim instructor certificate or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification (infant, child and adult), Oxygen Admin and First Aid certification optional. *  In addition to the above requirements, it is expected that a swim instructor will bring to his/her position maturity, responsibility, positive values and sincere interest in working with people.   PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: * Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time. * Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds in weight. * Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
