Description

Geothermal Engineering is developing the first geothermal power plant in the UK at its site in United Downs near Redruth, Cornwall. Our site is entering the next phase of development, including the commissioning of the lithium demonstration plant that utilises naturally occurring lithium resource in the geothermal brine.
We are now seeking a full-time Process Chemist to join our dedicated team and play a key role in the execution of the lithium project.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Suitable technical degree.
  • Experience of working in extractive chemistry, ideally within lithium or similar metal recovery processes.
  • Operating and optimising processes in both a laboratory and plant setting, efficiently and safely.
  • Familiarity with the development of new and innovative technical processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of risk assessment techniques, with a track record of maintaining compliance, health and safety and environmental best practices.
  • Ability to learn new processes and apply these to company strategy in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong understanding of chemical interactions in processes, with the ability to adapt and optimise based on analytical results.
  • Capable of working to tight deadlines and budgets.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with Direct Lithium Extraction methods such as ion-exchange or adsorption.
  • Corrosion / Scaling knowledge
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to emerging technologies.
  • Interest in renewable energy and Cornwall’s move to net zero carbon by 2030.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a hands-on, site-based position working within an innovative and fast-moving team. You will contribute to the operation, optimisation, and scale-up of the lithium extraction processes, supporting both the demonstration plant and future commercial-scale development.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering with ideally at least three years in extractive or process chemistry. Experience in hydrometallurgy or direct lithium extraction (DLE) methods such as ion-exchange or adsorption is highly desirable.
Working alongside project specialists you will help us demonstrate how Cornwall can be at the forefront of lithium production in the UK.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributing towards design development.
  • Ability to understand chemical interactions in new processes and plan ways to change processes depending on results.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment techniques and development of processes with full adherence to best practice in health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Management of laboratory processes.
  • Operation and refinement of lithium process demonstration plant. Contribute towards design and construction of commercial scale lithium plant.
  • Working with power plant staff to understand and manage corrosion and scaling.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards throughout all operational activities.
