Location: Fort Saskatchewan
Employment Type: Contract (24 months)
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm (3–5 days/week required onsite)

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Process Safety HAZOP / LOPA Facilitator to lead Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and safeguard studies in a complex refining and chemical processing environment. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent facilitation skills, and the ability to manage integrative design activities while ensuring compliance with HSSE standards and regulatory frameworks. The successful candidate will partner with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to identify risks, implement mitigation strategies, and drive continuous improvement in process safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitation & Risk Assessment
  • Lead HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, and other PHA workshops (What-If, HAZID, Bowtie) for refining and chemical units.
  • Apply risk methodologies (RAM, ALARP, tolerability assessment) to identify and mitigate process safety hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC 61882, API RP 14J, CCPS guidelines, OSHA PSM, and other relevant standards.
  • Technical Delivery & Integration
  • Oversee integrative process design activities for small projects or facility sections.
  • Implement new strategies, policies, and procedures in alignment with Shell’s global standards.
  • Interpret and validate engineering drawings (P&IDs, PFDs, cause & effect diagrams).
  • Stakeholder & Team Management
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and maintenance to deliver department goals.
  • Engage stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to ensure safe and compliant operations.
  • Manage a small team: provide training, career guidance, and succession planning.
  • Field & Barrier Management
  • Conduct site visits and barrier assurance field walks.
  • Identify HSSE Critical Equipment (CE) and Activities (CA) under HEMP.
  • Support Manage Equipment Care with barrier management and equipment care strategies.
  • Reporting & Continuous Improvement
  • Document findings, recommendations, and actions in detailed, high-quality reports.
  • Present risk assessment outcomes to technical and leadership teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of process safety practices and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Process Engineering (or related field).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in process safety, process engineering, or related disciplines within refining or petrochemical environments.
  • Proven experience facilitating HAZOP and PHA studies in operating brownfield facilities.
  • Familiarity with flare systems, pressure relief, and safeguarding design principles.
  • Proficiency in PHA software tools (e.g., PHA-Pro, PHAWorks).
  • Functional Safety certification (e.g., TÜV FS Eng) is an asset.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience with LOPA, SIL verification, and barrier management.
  • Knowledge of standards (API 520/521, API 537, OSHA PSM).
  • Understanding of Human Factors, Operability, and Maintainability principles.
  • Ability to lead workshops both onsite and remotely.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Rate: Competitive, commensurate with experience. (Typical range: $55-65/hour depending on qualifications and certifications).
  • Contract Term: 24 months with potential for extension.
  • Work Environment: Hybrid field and office-based role at a major integrated refinery and chemical complex.
