Description Job Summary The Assistant Produce Department Manager assists in overseeing daily operations of the produce department, ensuring the quality of produce, efficient procedures, and exceptional customer service. This role supports staff management, inventory control, ordering supplies, merchandising strategies, and maintaining a safe work environment. The Assistant Manager will also play a key role in driving department profitability and supporting Mackenthun’s Exceptional Experience. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Staff Management: Support training, motivation, and development of staff and reviews. Assist with staff schedules and task assignments to ensure optimal coverage. Provide coaching, feedback, and performance reviews to enhance team performance. Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork and morale. Ensure staff are knowledgeable about products, food safety, and customer service. Inventory & Ordering: Monitor inventory and place orders to maintain product availability and freshness. Implement product rotation and ensure quality standards. Inspect produce regularly, removing damaged or expired items. Maintain accurate records of inventory, deliveries, and stock usage. Work with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries. Customer Service & Sales: Provide exceptional customer service and assist with product selections. Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing department. Analyze sales trends and adjust product selection, pricing, and promotions accordingly. Develop seasonal displays and promotions to encourage repeat business. Build customer relationships to enhance loyalty. Health, Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations. Perform safety audits and take corrective actions as needed. Maintain a clean and safe work environment with functional equipment. Ensure proper food handling, storage, and labeling practices. Financial Performance & Budgeting: Support financial goals by managing inventory, pricing, and labor. Minimize shrinkage and monitor sales, labor, and inventory costs. Track weekly financial data and adjust staffing and sales strategies as needed. Collaboration: Collaborate with store managers, marketing teams, and department leaders to align goals. Participate in store meetings to contribute to operations, sales, and customer experience. Work with marketing on promotions and seasonal campaigns. Promote open communication across departments to ensure smooth operations. Department Development: Stay updated on industry trends and customer preferences. Introduce new products and ideas to meet customer demands. Support staff development with ongoing training opportunities. Encourage continuous improvement and invite staff input for innovation. Requirements Qualifications Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED required. 2+ years of management experience, preferably in a produce or retail environment. Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. Skills & Competencies: Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Proven ability to prioritize tasks, delegate efficiently, and solve problems creatively. Proficiency in Windows, Google Business Suite, and basic internet functions. Strong math skills, including the ability to analyze sales and inventory data. Working Conditions and Physical Demands Work in both office and physical labor environments, including exposure to machinery and cleaning chemicals. Requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, and seeing for extended periods. Frequent bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, and climbing stairs. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and push/pull up to 2,500 lbs. with a pallet jack. Exposure to noise, cold temperatures, and terrazzo flooring in a fast-paced, smoke-free environment.
