Description
At Apple, extraordinary ideas have a way of quickly becoming extraordinary products, services, and customer experiences. Sound is an essential and compelling facet of the customer experience. Apple has assembled an elite acoustics team that enables our customers to experience music with delight, communicate with clarity, and enjoy elegant sound throughout our product line. In Apple Acoustics we work with the utmost attention to detail, directly impacting the design of products that millions of people around the world love! Our China Acoustics team plays key a role in implementing the extraordinary acoustic designs in Apple products by working closely with US team to review designs, DFMs, and ramp production. This requires continuous collaboration with a wide variety of teams ranging from mechanical engineers, acoustic engineers, multi-functional teams, and direct contract manufacturers to design and build Apple’s next generation of speaker modules. We are looking for a Product Design Engineer with stellar mechanical engineering skills and thorough manufacturing knowledge to help take our products to the next level. Could this be you? DESCRIPTION speaker modules for Apple’s highly space-constrained products. You will work together with the US team on the mechanical design of the speaker module assembly and components, and be responsible for validating and implementing the design in manufacturing sites. This role requires creative design work to generate 3D CAD and 2D drawings for speaker modules from scratch for all components, including: plastic enclosures, metal stampings, insert molded electrical connections, over-molded seals, magnet system subassemblies, and more. The designs will be reviewed by suppliers and multi-functional teams, requiring timely modifications to address design issues without impacting project schedule. You are expected to handle multiple projects at the same time while working with multiple suppliers. After parts are released for manufacturing, you will ensure speaker components and modules can be manufactured in high volumes without issues, while meeting performance specifications. This involves iterating on the design, developing test plans, generating reliability specifications, performing failure analysis, and conducting experiments (DOEs) to find design solutions and implement corrective actions. Throughout the product development cycle, you will serve as the key bridge between design intent and manufacturing reality, validating designs at supplier sites, identifying production constraints early, and implementing DFM changes to ensure successful high-volume ramp." MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Most of our engineers have degrees in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent field, but if you’ve followed a different path to expertise in mechanical design and engineering, we still want to hear from you. Mechanical design experience generating 3D CAD and 2D drawings is required (NX experience is preferred) Ability to use dimensional data to inform part design decisions including: conducting tolerance stack analysis, applying GD&T to 2D drawings, establishing datums, understanding measurement techniques, analyzing data, identifying issues from dimensional data, and guiding part quality improvements FEA simulation capability like is able to use Ansys, Comsol or other similar tools PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Ability to achieve sophisticated geometry by understanding and influencing tooling design Experience designing and selecting materials for mass produced injection molded plastic parts, progressively stamped metal parts, and the assembly processes that bring these parts together Experience in the consumer electronics industry working with speaker module assemblies Proactive problem solving skills including root cause failure analysis, DOE methodology, developing reliability test plans, and implementing corrective actions to resolve production issues Manufacturing knowledge spanning tooling design, process development, production troubleshooting, and manufacturing quality control Capable of working with global suppliers and guiding actions in assembly and part production facilities Travel frequently (up to 50%) to supplier and manufacturing sites throughout China and Asia to guide supplier actions in fast-paced production environments
Responsibilities
The Product Design Engineer will work on the mechanical design of speaker module assemblies and components, validating and implementing designs in manufacturing sites. This role involves generating 3D CAD and 2D drawings, iterating on designs, and ensuring high-volume manufacturability while meeting performance specifications.
