Senior Mechanical/Mechatronics Design Engineer - Product Automation
Established Australian Manufacturer | Sydney
Our client is a long-established Australian manufacturer, backed by a major ASX-listed group, with a genuine end-to-end engineering environment - concept, prototyping, testing, and mass production, all in-house. They're growing their New Product Development team and looking for a Senior Mechanical/Mechatronics Design Engineer to join the automation side of the business - designing the motor-driven mechanisms and electromechanical systems that sit at the heart of their product range.
This role suits you if:
- You've designed with small electric motors and basic gearing/transmission systems - even off-the-shelf gearboxes you've specified and integrated, not necessarily custom gear design from scratch
- You're comfortable working at the interface between mechanical and electronics - designing housings and structures that accommodate PCBs, motors, and wiring, and collaborating closely with electrical/firmware engineers
- You've designed injection-moulded plastic housings or enclosures, ideally with IP-rating requirements
- You've owned mechanical designs end-to-end, from concept through prototyping, validation, and mass production release
- You're genuinely hands-on - happy prototyping, testing, and problem-solving in the workshop, not just at a desk
- Experience working to formal standards or regulatory frameworks is a plus
What you'll be doing:
- Designing motor-driven mechanisms and actuation systems - gearing, transmission, and drive components
- Designing plastic housings and enclosures around electromechanical assemblies, working to IP-rating and environmental protection requirements
- Working closely with electrical and firmware engineers to integrate PCBs, motors, and wiring within your mechanical designs
- Running and interpreting testing - cyclic, wear, environmental, and destructive — to validate designs before release
- Applying DFM/DFA thinking from day one, working with suppliers and manufacturing to get designs production-ready
- Contributing to design reviews, mentoring where needed, and bringing structure to a growing engineering function
What we're looking for:
- End-to-end product development experience - from concept through to mass production, not just CAD
- Strong SolidWorks skills is ideal, not essential
- Comfortable working across plastics and mechanism/motor-driven design
- Autonomous and confident owning a project without heavy oversight - this is a senior role in scope and expectation, with real input into how the engineering function is run
What's on offer:
- Competitive salary depending on experience
- End-to-end product ownership in a well-resourced, in-house engineering environment
- Backing and stability of an established ASX-listed group
- A small, collaborative team with real influence over how it's run
