The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Job Summary The Queen’s Journal is an entirely student-run newspaper at Queen’s University. The paper was founded in 1873 and has been continually published ever since. The Journal publishes a bi-weekly print edition and regular online content throughout the year. A visual portfolio must be e-mailed to newjournal.editors@ams.queensu.ca at the time of your application submission to supplement your application. Job Competencies Communication Organization Ownership Attention to Detail Cultural Sensitivity Creativity Job Duties Have a working knowledge and/or experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, most significantly, InDesign, Photoshop, and other interactive digital tools (web design languages will be considered an asset) Attend all press days to design and layout the front-page, diversions (i.e. crosswords, horoscopes, etc.) and help other staff layout their sections Create and distribute Adobe InDesign files to section-heads for every in-print issue (occurs every other Thursday) Work with the Business Manager to monitor and layout the ad content per issue, ensuring ads fit the proper specifications and occasionally designing in-house ads Communicate with the Editor(s) in Chief and the Business Manager about ad content and print concerns Work with the visual team to ensure standardization and quality of visual content Develop a strong relationship with section heads to maintain visual consistency between print and online versions of stories, as well as ensure content spacing per page is adequate Act as a resource and advisor for other staff members on what current design tools can be used for interactive digital content Collaborate with sections to develop their digital projects Work with staff from each section to generate a mixture of hard (full-page infographics with extensive information) and soft (graphs, charts and timelines) graphics.
