Description

The position of Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Fashion and Clothing Design is located within the Faculty of Arts. The dialogue between science and art is an active part of the studies, research, and art within the Faculty of Arts, as well as our collaboration with various societal stakeholders. The connection between science and art is further strengthened by the faculty’s unique location within a multidisciplinary university. For students, it offers the opportunity to combine studies in design, tourism, marketing, business administration, education, and social sciences.

Responsibilities

The position of Professor/Associate Professor in Fashion and Clothing Design is filled based on artistic criteria. The position can be filled either directly as a permanent professorship or through the tenure track system, initially as a fixed-term associate professorship (second phase). The goal for the associate professor is to qualify for a professorship. The eligibility requirements for the recruitment of a professor (level 3) based on scientific or artistic criteria are defined in sections 37, 38, 49, and 50 of the University of Lapland’s administrative regulations.
According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (558/2009), a professor must engage in and supervise artistic work, provide teaching based on it, follow the development of art, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.
The teaching responsibilities of the Professor/Associate Professor in Fashion and Clothing Design are directed towards undergraduate education and the promotion of postgraduate education within the faculty, and if necessary, in the university’s joint doctoral studies. A key part of the professor’s teaching duties is supervising master’s theses.
The duties of the Professor/Associate Professor also include preparing, implementing, and participating in research and development projects funded by external sources, as well as participating in national and international cooperation. In the teaching and research of clothing design, project activities focus on the research areas of Arctic design, well-being, and functional clothing. Additionally, the Professor/Associate Professor is expected to participate in other activities, development, and administrative tasks of the faculty.
Successful performance of the duties of the Professor/Associate Professor and the promotion of the faculty’s effective functioning require strong commitment to the comprehensive activities of the faculty’s scientific and artistic community. The task is to create a forward-looking research agenda within the teaching unit that resonates with and complements other research in the Faculty of Arts. Research can focus on areas such as fashion, clothing, material study, design processes, sustainable development, or ethical fashion.
The position of Associate Professor is filled for a fixed term of five years. Before the end of the fixed term, an evaluation process will be initiated to assess whether the employee meets the qualifications for a professorship.
According to Section 30 of the University of Lapland’s regulations, the criteria and evaluation process for the positions of associate professors filled through open recruitment are defined in the tenure track career path model approved by the board. Candidates for the fixed-term position of Associate Professor are required to have a relevant doctoral degree and evidence of artistic and scientific research work, as well as the teaching skills required for the position.
