Applications are invited for the position of Professor in Particle Beam Therapy (PBT). We are searching for an academic with an outstanding record in research and research leadership, who will develop and apply Particle Beam FLASH Therapy of protons electrons and ions, both in underpinning research and translation to the clinic.
The successful candidate will be expected to operate an internationally leading programme of Particle Beam Therapy research with focused expertise in developing proton, electron and ion FLASH beam therapy, working closely with the Christie NHS foundation medical Physics and Engineering (CMPE) and within a virtual PBT group spanning the faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. The programme may, for example, include areas such as: leading and delivering a programme of Bragg peak proton flash with experiments with beam at the Christie proton site; and/or exploring new facilities for proton FLASH; working with the broader accelerator group on novel acceleration for protons and ions; and/or performing underpinning research. You are encouraged to bring your own distinctive research programme.
The successful candidate will be based on at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and will spend time at the nearby Christie NHS Foundation Trust site. The Christie Foundation is the location of one of the world’s largest radiotherapy departments, it was the first NHS organisation to deliver high-energy proton beam therapy in 2018 and has the UK’s only dedicated proton beam therapy research facility. The successful candidate will be a member of the Accelerator Physics research group in the department of Physics & Astronomy and the Cockcroft Institute for Accelerator Science and Technology and will work with PRECISE group and the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC).
