JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Family Preservation Manager the Program Coordinator/Developer plays a crucial role in supporting families through the facilitation and coordination of community-based programs. This position is responsible for coordinating groups specifically designed for parents involved in child welfare services. The primary goal is to strengthen families and reduce risk by fostering a supportive network that encourages engagement, education, and empowerment. This position supervises and organizes facilitators, Elders/Knowledge Keepers and volunteers. May be assigned additional direct reports based on operational needs of the programs.
Key responsibilities include organizing and managing group activities, recruiting and coordinating volunteers and facilitators, and ensuring that childcare services are available and accessible during programs and events. The Program Coordinator/Developer will collaborate closely with community partners, stakeholders, and Indigenous leaders to ensure that programs are culturally relevant and tailored to meet the unique needs of the families served.
Additionally, the Coordinator will be responsible for developing program materials, tracking participation, gathering feedback, and evaluating program effectiveness to continuously improve services. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, along with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous families in the context of child welfare.
Overall, the Program Coordinator/Developer will play a vital role in building a resilient community by empowering parents, enhancing family well-being, and fostering connections within the community.
The Strengthening Programs/Groups are situated within the Family Preservation and Reunification Program, aim to improve family dynamics, parenting skills, and youth’s social and life skills through structured training sessions. These programs are grounded in culture, focusing on strengthening the circle and assisting families in developing capacity and empowering themselves. The Program Developer/Coordinator may also be tasked with reviewing or developing other program content.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures goals and objectives are accomplished within established priorities, time limitations, and funding constraints.
  • Coordinates the delivery of services to ensure comprehensive family involvement, addressing the needs of parents who misuse substances.
  • Oversees budget management and reporting metrics to ensure financial accountability and program effectiveness.
  • Cultural Connection: Extensive experience working with Elders/Knowledge Keepers is crucial for both program success and elder recruitment amidst attrition.
  • Effectively engages with child safety workers and supervisors to:
  • Encourage family referrals to the program.
  • Participate meaningfully in referral processes and follow-up meetings related to family goals (court orders or family service agreements).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • A Master of Social Work (MSW) or a Master’s degree in a related Social Services field (preferred); or
  • A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW); or
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care; or
  • A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in a related social service field;
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience delivering services to families and children demonstrating progressive responsibility is required.
  • Group Facilitation experience: successfully coordinated and delivered group work across different program areas.
  • Independent Practice: Demonstrates strong autonomy and initiative in their role.
  • Strong administrative skills, including program planning, program development, and program evaluation.
  • Supervisory training that is designated relevant by VACFSS

Notes:

  • This position requires Union membership.

  • A vehicle with business class insurance and a Class 5 Driver’s License are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be available in the office
  • Programs are held throughout the year including daytime and early evening hours (11:30-7:30 or 12:00-8:00), as required by the program. Availability is required for program nights, typically three times a year: January to March, April to June, September to December. The programs range from 10 to 11 weeks and are every Tuesday and Thursday. Evening work may increase as programs are developed.
